A Riverbed Case Study
Biesse SpA, a global manufacturer of high‑technology machines for wood, glass and stone with 2,300 employees and over $330M in revenue, set out to standardize its IT on a single Active Directory domain and centralize core Microsoft and Oracle applications at its Italian headquarters. Consolidation and centralized Exchange increased WAN traffic and caused slow application response times that hurt employee productivity and threatened real‑time collaboration between designers in Italy and India, without the budget to substantially expand bandwidth.
Biesse tested and then deployed Riverbed SteelHead appliances and the Riverbed Services Platform across its headquarters and branch offices (14 appliances), achieving an immediate nearly 3× improvement in application response on the Italy–India link and a 60% reduction in WAN data. The solution enabled real‑time collaboration, increased productivity, removed 10 branch servers, avoided costly bandwidth upgrades and delivered measurable IT consolidation and cost savings.
