A Riverbed Case Study
Mitsubishi Motors set out to consolidate about 50 Windows NT file servers (≈3–3.5 TB serving ~5,000 users) from three Kansai locations into a single EMC Celerra NAS to reduce operating costs, unify management and access rights, and strengthen data security—while facing internal concerns that CIFS over the WAN would not meet LAN-level performance or service requirements.
By deploying Riverbed Steelhead appliances across sites, Mitsubishi achieved LAN-like access with a >90% reduction in WAN traffic, realized TCO savings of over ¥1,000,000 per month (≈¥12,000,000 per year), centralized management and backups for better security, and improved availability through active-standby redundancy.
