A Prescriptive Analytics Project for Maximizing Healthcare Value Generation

The Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital, a 537‑bed university‑affiliated medical centre in Montreal, faced rapidly rising patient inflows across its Emergency Department, cancer centre and surgical programs without matching increases in funding. To maximize healthcare value while preserving access and quality, the hospital engaged River Logic (with partner CGI) to assess whether enterprise‑level optimization could manage complex patient flows and limited resources.

River Logic implemented a linear‑programming prescriptive analytics model using its Enterprise Optimizer (EO) to link patient inflows, processes and resource consumption and to test clinician‑driven improvement scenarios. The River Logic model quantified trade‑offs and showed how to treat additional patients within the same budget, identified off‑service bed pressures, and estimated multi‑million dollar impacts for specific interventions (examples in the analysis ranged from ~$1M to $18M in estimated savings), while also revealing data and costing gaps to target in future work.
