Willow Valley Communities redefines memory care at The Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center with RIOS

Willow Valley Communities sought to transform senior living and memory care for residents with dementia and cognitive impairments. They partnered with the design firm RIOS, who provided landscape architecture and interior architecture services, to create a therapeutic environment that would enhance cognitive function and daily wellbeing.

RIOS designed integrated landscapes and social spaces with intuitive navigation and sensory cues to support memory care residents. The solution featured color-coded walkways, native trees, sensory gardens, and interiors with distinct, non-overwhelming material palettes. This approach reduced isolation, encouraged exploration and social engagement, and fostered a greater sense of belonging for residents at The Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center.
