Case Study: Interstate Petroleum Products Pipeline Company reduces environmental liability with Rimkus expert pipeline release evaluation

A Rimkus Case Study

Interstate Petroleum Products Pipeline Company addresses a 25-year gasoline leak with Rimkus

The customer, an interstate petroleum products pipeline company, faced a challenge stemming from a 1968 gasoline pipeline leak that was inadequately addressed at the time. This led to extensive environmental contamination and toxic tort litigation discovered 25 years later. The company engaged Rimkus to provide expert environmental engineering services to evaluate its historical response.

Rimkus experts reviewed historical documents, inspected the site, and provided testimony. They concluded the pipeline company should have known a far more extensive emergency response was required in 1968, which would have mitigated subsequent environmental costs. Rimkus also opined that the cost estimates provided to insurance carriers in 1993 were substantially understated. The work by Rimkus was used in the ensuing litigation and insurance coverage dispute.
