Center for Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School Minimizes Cloud Computing Management Using RightScale

Harvard Medical School’s Center for Biomedical Informatics, through its Laboratory for Personalized Medicine, needed to manage a growing cloud-based research environment while spending less time on administration and more on translational science. The team used RightScale to support deployments on Amazon Web Services EC2, aiming to simplify cloud operations for multiple distributed research groups and large data-intensive projects.

RightScale provided automated deployment management, sub-accounts, ServerTemplates, and RightScripts to standardize and control cloud resources. As a result, Harvard Medical School’s team reduced cloud administration to less than 20% of a full-time administrator and estimated an 80% savings in management time, while improving collaboration across six research groups and speeding up project setup and development.
