Increasing Patient Safety. Eliminating Duplicates, and Preventing Fraud and Id Theft At Novant Health

Novant Health, a large not-for-profit health system serving patients across North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia, needed a safer way to identify patients across its hospitals and clinics. The organization was dealing with duplicate medical records, overlays, fraud, identity theft, and challenges with cultural naming conventions, and it wanted a solution that would work seamlessly with its Epic EHR, require minimal IT effort, and support both standard and mobile care settings. RightPatient provided the iris biometrics-based patient identification technology.

Novant Health implemented RightPatient’s iris patient identification solution across its hospitals to create a unique patient identifier and improve accuracy at registration, check-in, and other care touchpoints. The system integrated with Epic in less than one week, required minimal training and IT resources, and was warmly accepted by patients and staff. As a result, Novant Health significantly improved identification accuracy, streamlined registration, prevented duplicate and overlay records at enrollment, reduced fraud risk, and strengthened patient safety with a hygienic, contact-free biometric process.
