SmaRT Ride - Customer Case Study

SmaRT Ride, Sacramento Regional Transit District’s on‑demand microtransit service, faced the challenge of scaling its service zones and ridership while increasing operational efficiency. In January 2020 SacRT partnered with Via to re‑launch and expand SmaRT Ride using Via’s on‑demand microtransit platform to broaden coverage and improve access across Sacramento.

Via implemented a nine‑zone, ~116‑square‑mile system with a fleet of about 43 shuttle buses (including ADA‑accessible vehicles), offering curb‑to‑curb and corner‑to‑corner trips bookable via app or phone and low fares. The Via deployment made SmaRT Ride the largest microtransit system in the U.S., delivering more than 120,000 rides, maintaining a 4.8/5 customer rating, connecting 28% of trips to other transit modes, and expanding service (including three new zones during COVID) to boost access and efficiency.
