Case Study: AT Local (Auckland Transport) reduces congestion and increases ferry ridership with Via

Service to Connect People in a Limited Geography to a Specific Point of Interest

AT Local serves the Devonport peninsula around the Devonport Ferry Terminal, where single-occupancy cars clog Lake Road and strain limited parking. Auckland Transport tapped Via to provide an on-demand microtransit SaaS solution to convince habitual solo drivers to share rides, ease congestion, boost ferry access, and improve the commuting experience.

Via implemented a one-year AT Local trial—operated by Go Bus—using a custom app and a six-vehicle fleet of branded, wheelchair-accessible electric shuttles covering a 2.6 km² zone with frequent service and low fares. The Via-powered service delivered 10K+ rides in five months, averaged 50% month-over-month ridership growth (currently ~800 rides/week), achieved 3–4 minute average waits, and helped reduce congestion and emissions around the ferry terminal.
