On-demand tech that connects more riders to public transit in Norwalk

Norwalk Transit District faced the challenge of reducing wait times and boosting ridership by supplementing its fixed-route buses and improving connections across downtown Norwalk. To address these goals, the District relaunched its Wheels2U on-demand pilot in August 2019 using Via’s on-demand technology platform.

Via implemented a pooled, dynamically routed service with a rider app and phone dispatch, optimizing four 15-passenger minibuses for first/last-mile connections to key destinations and Metro-North stations. Since launching with Via, Wheels2U has delivered over 8,000 trips, averaged a 12-minute wait, 5.5 riders per vehicle hour, a 4.7/5 passenger rating, and provided enhanced data reporting and week-over-week ridership growth.
