Case Study: Busways achieves major reduction in private car commuting and CO2 emissions with Via's on-demand Cooee service

A Via Case Study

Preview of the Busways Case Study

Connecting suburban residents to train stations and shopping in Sydney

Busways partnered with Via to address growing parking pressure and long walks to rail stations in the fast‑growing suburbs of The Ponds, Kellyville Ridge, and Schofields. The challenge was to convince residents to choose a shared, on‑demand service instead of driving alone by offering a convenient connection to Sydney Metro stations and local shopping.

Via designed and launched the Cooee Busways on‑demand shared service, supplying an app‑based booking and payment system, branded accessible minibuses, and weekday service linking neighborhoods to Schofields, Tallawong and Rouse Hill stations. The Via solution delivered more than 20,000 rides in under three months, 55% month‑over‑month ridership growth (June–July), 55% of riders switching from private cars, ~70% of trips shared, a reduction of 21,000 vehicle km and nearly 5 metric tons of CO2 avoided; the app has 9,000+ downloads and a 4.8‑star rating.
