A Via Case Study
The City of West Sacramento, a 50,000‑resident, car‑dependent community facing long transit commutes and a fragmented pedestrian network, needed to convince residents accustomed to driving alone to try shared rides. To address this, the City partnered with Via to pilot a turnkey microtransit program launched in May 2018.
Via designed and operates an end‑to‑end, flat‑fare citywide microtransit service using 10 Mercedes Metris vans, accessible payment (cash or stored‑value card) and wheelchair‑accessible options, connecting riders to regional rail and bus links. The Via service has delivered nearly 100,000 rides, earned strong public feedback, supported the city’s revitalization goals, and helped reduce single‑occupancy trips while easing parking and congestion pressures.
