City of Arlington - Customer Case Study

The City of Arlington needed an alternative to driving in a city that had been transit-averse and was previously the largest U.S. city without public transit. In late 2017 the City of Arlington partnered with Via to replace the low‑volume MAX fixed route with Via’s Arlington On‑Demand microtransit solution to reduce private trips and provide citywide access for all residents.

Via launched Arlington On‑Demand in December 2017 with 18 vehicles and has scaled to a fleet serving the full 99‑square‑mile city (53 vans, soon 68, including 14 WAVs), bookable via a custom app or phone with multiple payment options. Via’s platform delivered over 494,000 rides by February 2021, produced a 10× increase in ridership, reduced congestion by more than 400,000 vehicle miles traveled (as of 2020), earned a 4.8/5 average rider rating, and expanded annually while adapting operations through COVID.
