Birmingham On-Demand - Customer Case Study

Birmingham On-Demand is a city service launched in December 2019 to fill long-standing transit gaps in Birmingham, AL, where residents without cars face severely limited access to jobs and essential services. Via partnered with the City of Birmingham and the Community Foundation for Greater Birmingham to deliver an equitable, affordable on-demand shared transit solution (Birmingham On-Demand) targeted at underserved neighborhoods.

Via implemented a turnkey on-demand platform—app and phone booking, shared and wheelchair-accessible vehicles, and flexible payment for unbanked riders—operating a six-vehicle fleet across an 8.5 sq. mile zone. The Via-powered service averages 7-minute waits and 96% on-time performance, and it increased access within 30 minutes by 79% for jobs and hospitals and 85% for schools, improving mobility and access to essentials.
