Ideel Uses Riak Kv For Peak-load Service Continuity

ideel, a fast-growing flash retail site with more than 5 million members, faced extreme daily peak loads (over 3,000 requests/sec and 700 “add to carts”/sec) that exposed memcached failures and created cache holes that could take 15–30 minutes to regenerate. To avoid degraded user experience and lost revenue when caches were lost, ideel sought a solution “where we could lose a node and it just didn’t matter,” and turned to Riak and its Riak KV product.

Riak implemented Riak KV as a persistent, highly available cache running alongside memcached, eliminating single-node cache failures and allowing nodes to recover without service disruption. The Riak solution preserved ideel’s peak-load continuity, reduced database hits and cache-regeneration risk, and was extended to A/B testing and fast-serving user favorites; ideel reports Riak “just works” and exceeded expectations in reliability and support.
