CenturyLink Technology Solutions, the second-largest telecommunications company in the US, needed to reduce the rising cost of powering and cooling its more than 55 data centers. In 2011, the company was spending over $80 million each year on electricity, but limited temperature monitoring made it difficult to identify inefficiencies and safely raise inlet temperatures without risking equipment reliability or SLA performance.

CenturyLink selected RF Code’s wire-free environmental monitoring system to improve visibility and control across its data centers. The solution was integrated with its building management system, helping the company raise temperatures within ASHRAE guidelines, open its economizer window, and achieve annual savings of $2.9 million; the Los Angeles pilot alone returned $120,000 in 2013 and paid back the $110,000 project cost in 11 months.
