Big Y Foods Sees Sustained Improvement After Price Optimization Maturity

Big Y Foods, the largest independent grocery chain in New England with 62 stores, needed to protect its hard‑won price image while increasing unit movement and margins. With a pricing strategy already built around competitive indexing and item roles (KVIs, KCIs and Background Items), the challenge was to mature their optimization approach by adding granularity, validating forecasts across zones, and making pricing transparent and actionable for category managers.

Big Y partnered with Revionics to re-evaluate optimization configurations (price‑per‑unit, private label logic, price families, zone strategies) and ran what‑if simulations to pick strategies that met category goals. Weekly collaboration and new Performance Intelligence reports enabled faster monitoring and adjustments, created a cross‑functional pricing review process, and delivered sustained improvements in unit sales, margin protection and reporting agility — with a clear roadmap for deeper sub‑category and zone differentiation.
