Understanding the Effect of In-Store Mobile Device Usage

A mid‑tier regional department store chain with more than 300 fashion locations and $3.5B in annual sales engaged RetailNext to determine actual in‑store mobile device usage after investing in a branded app published on a single platform. The retailer needed to know device prevalence (Android vs. iOS), how device‑carrying shoppers behaved versus non‑device shoppers, what activities and searches shoppers performed in‑store, and which websites they visited.

RetailNext combined POS data from 40 stores with mobile device detection, mobile browsing analytics, and opt‑in guest Wi‑Fi to map device counts by day/hour, OS breakdown, traffic‑to‑device ratios, conversion and sales impact, and top in‑store sites and searches. Findings showed an almost even Android/iOS split (prompting plans to build apps for both platforms), the retailer’s site was the top commerce destination, competitor searches revealed overlapping stocked products (informing pricing and promotions), Shoes/Women’s/Men’s were the most browsed departments, test stores had higher sales and nearly triple average transaction value, and mobile usage was ~25% higher on weekends with Sunday peaking.
