How Morten Nørholm is Pioneering Evolutionary Research at DTU Biosustain

DTU Biosustain, a research group at the Technical University of Denmark led by Morten Nørholm, faced significant challenges in their bacterial evolution research. Their work required high-resolution, around-the-clock monitoring of experiments to capture rare mutations, but manual observation was impractical and limited by scheduling. They initially tried building their own time-lapse imaging setup, but the development process took valuable time away from research and offered limited functionality. They needed an automated solution from a vendor like Reshape Biotech to digitalize their experiments and acquire robust data.

The solution was implemented using the Reshape Imaging System. This automated platform provided continuous, high-resolution imaging with data collected at 10-minute intervals, enabling the team to effectively screen 26,000 mutants. The system digitalized their entire process, providing deep insights and making data easily viewable and shareable. This allowed DTU Biosustain to accelerate its pioneering research, leading to the publication of three novel papers while monitoring over 3,300 hours and capturing more than 130,000 images.
