Ready, set, read: nurturing kindergarten and pre-K independent readers

Wicklow Elementary School in Sanford, Florida, wanted to make sure its developmentally ready pre-K and kindergarten scholars could participate in an independent-reading program and enter first grade better prepared. To support that goal, the school used Renaissance Star Reading, Star Early Literacy, and Renaissance Accelerated Reader to identify early readers and build literacy skills at a young age.

Renaissance helped Wicklow implement a highly supported early-reading program with one-on-one guidance, parent communication, and quiz-based progress monitoring. The results included more than 44% kindergarten participation in Accelerated Reader, early mastery of multiple first-grade reading standards, nearly 100% accuracy in predicting state-level math test results, the school’s highest comprehension-quiz accuracy, and reading independence achieved in some cases as early as pre-K.
