Valley Transportation Authority - Customer Case Study

The Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) in San Jose prepared for Super Bowl 50 by tackling complex challenges: coordinating heightened security, managing large inbound and outbound crowds at Levi’s Stadium, and scaling light rail and bus service. VTA Transit Service Development Supervisor Martin Barna led daily coordination with multiple agencies and used Remix’s transit planning tools to develop a comprehensive, day-by-day service plan addressing hotels, shuttle routing, and passenger flow to and from the Great America station.

Using Remix, VTA implemented a detailed operations plan that added extra capacity and contingencies—planning roughly 18–20 additional trains, about 80–100 extra buses, new shuttles, and added train cars where needed. Remix helped VTA translate operational constraints and security requirements into a scalable service schedule, building on prior event experience (typical 49ers games run 11–15 extra trains and carry 8,000–10,000 riders) to ensure predictable capacity and smoother passenger movement for the month-long event series.
