Ireland’s NTA Increases Number of Passenger Journeys and Delivers Better Service to Rural Areas

The National Transport Authority (NTA) of Ireland, responsible for planning and coordinating public and rural transport across the country, faced the challenge of serving low- and medium-density suburbs and highly dispersed rural populations where traditional bus services often aren’t viable. To make data-driven route and service decisions and support 15 Local Link offices with limited planning tools, the NTA adopted Remix Transit from vendor Remix.

Remix provided the NTA with data, analysis and testing tools to design, evaluate and optimize routes; all 15 Local Link offices now use Remix for connectivity projects, timetable planning and demand-responsive services. As a result, passenger journeys rose from 1.95M in 2018 to over 2.5M in 2019 (including about 1M Free Travel passengers), scheduled services increased in frequency, and approval times for Demand Responsive routes were cut from roughly six months to under three months. Remix’s support also helped deliver successful local projects such as Route 254 in Cork and faster, more confident route decisions across rural Ireland.
