Herbert Smith Freehills Reviews 40 Million Documents Using Assisted Review

Herbert Smith Freehills was engaged by an energy company in a contractual dispute that required reviewing an initial collection of roughly 40 million documents. To meet tight timelines and the project’s scale, HSF’s ALT team adopted an “analytics by default” approach and used Relativity—specifically Relativity Analytics and Assisted Review—to triage and prioritize data from the outset.

Using Relativity Analytics the team pared the set to about 3 million documents, then combined refined keywords, concept clustering and Relativity’s Assisted Review to reduce the review pool to roughly 172,611 documents, cutting review fees and time by 60%. Relativity enabled HSF to run large-scale analytics (averaging ~1.5M docs/month in Australia) and dramatically minimize manual review while accelerating case delivery.
