Experiences with CMDB/OTL/COINS by VolkerInfra

VolkerInfra, a systems‑engineering and infrastructure consultancy, tackled the challenge of defining and implementing a Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and Ontology/OTL across three projects. The team grappled with clarifying “what exactly is a CMDB,” translating diverse client demands into a consistent data model, and preparing deliverables compatible with the COINS ecosystem.

Their solution centered on developing and applying Relatics’ VISE and bespoke CMDB modules (led by Freek Moerman and Tim van Leeuwen) to model requirements via the OTL, generate COINS containers, and integrate CMDB functionality into projects like OpenIJ, N18, SAAone and Het Gelders Huis. The result was a standardized, exportable data architecture that improved traceability, met client specifications, and streamlined tender and project delivery.
