The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) needed a way to collect and publish critical data on the status and health of more than $75 billion in annual federal IT spending and to visualize that data for monthly TechStat meetings. In 2009 OMB engaged REI Systems to design and deliver the IT Dashboard — an open-source, Drupal-based platform — under a demanding 60-day deadline to increase transparency and accountability across the Executive Branch.

REI Systems used Agile development and a Drupal content management foundation to build and launch the IT Dashboard in 45 days. The tool now covers 800 investments at 27 agencies, enabled TechStat reviews that produced over $3 billion in life-cycle cost reductions, de-scoped 11 major programs and terminated 4 projects, and reduced time-to-delivery from over two years to eight months; REI Systems also worked with OMB to release the dashboard’s source code for wider reuse and community improvement.
