Case Study: SonyLIV achieves sub-30 millisecond real-time streaming performance with Redis

A Redis Case Study

Preview of the SonyLIV Case Study

SonyLIV processes two billion viewer entries in under 30 milliseconds

SonyLIV, the streaming platform, needed to deliver a smooth viewing experience to millions of users across India and 17 other countries while handling massive real-time interactions during live shows and traffic surges. Performance lag, high latency, and the need to protect premium subscriber access made it difficult to keep broadcasts fast, accurate, and reliable. SonyLIV used Redis Cloud with AWS to support its high-volume, low-latency streaming and audience engagement needs.

Redis implemented caching, rate limiting, and real-time leaderboard processing to power live voting, rankings, and content delivery for SonyLIV’s biggest shows. The results included processing over two billion leaderboard entries in 30 milliseconds, reducing API response times from 300ms to 190ms, improving throughput by 15-20%, cutting memory usage by 15%, and maintaining 99.99% uptime.
