How a Redis Cluster on Google Cloud Improved Performance and Reliability During Raid Events

Niantic, the developer behind Pokémon GO, was facing performance and scalability challenges during popular Raid Battles as server traffic surged and latency increased. To support these high-demand events, Niantic used Redis Enterprise on Google Cloud as a fast, responsive data platform for shared game data and raid preparation.

Redis implemented a centralized Redis Enterprise cluster that let all game servers access the same cached data, reducing the need to keep players on a single server and improving load distribution. The result was a more reliable raid experience, with average latency during the preparation phase dropping by 75% and maximum latency falling from over 1 second to about 250 milliseconds.
