Middle School Principal Achieves Success with Standards-Based Report Cards

Ellington Public Schools faced the need to move from traditional grading to standards-based reporting after Connecticut adopted the Common Core. At Ellington Middle School, Principal David Pearson led the effort to create a more accurate way to report student progress tied to specific standards. The district relied on Rediker Software’s AdminPlus Student Information System to manage student data and build the new report cards that would track skills and learning goals for grades 7–8.

Pearson formed a Performance-Based Learning Committee that used Rediker’s AdminPlus to customize standards, link assignments, add rubrics and include overall letter grades while separating effort from achievement. Rolled out at the end of 2013–14, the Rediker-enabled solution provides progress indicators for each standard plus an overall grade, promotes self-directed learning, supports digital portfolios and student-led conferences, and helps teachers and parents focus on closing achievement gaps and targeting support.
