UNC-Chapel Hill Builds Open Development and Hosting Environment with Red Hat

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill needed a better way to handle frequent server provisioning requests and provide a modern development and hosting environment for students, faculty, and staff. Its legacy setup was hard to administer, lacked flexibility, and risked pushing users toward outside vendors, creating security and cost concerns. Red Hat, using OpenShift Enterprise, helped UNC-Chapel Hill move to an on-premise platform that could better support campus development needs.

Red Hat implemented Carolina CloudApps, a self-service Platform-as-a-Service built on OpenShift Enterprise, giving users access to multiple languages, databases, and tools while IT centralized management and patching. The result was a more interoperable and secure environment with less infrastructure burden on staff. Since deploying Red Hat OpenShift Enterprise, UNC-Chapel Hill has typically seen fewer than five trouble tickets per week, often just one or two, with most remaining issues related to training rather than system problems.
