Helping Special Education Students to Develop Higher Order Thinking Skills

St. Pius X Catholic High School's special education students, who have disabilities like dyslexia, needed help developing higher-order thinking skills for reading comprehension, such as making inferences and identifying the main idea, which they encountered on standardized tests. Kelly Stehlik, a resource teacher, sought a solution to provide these students with manageable, non-overwhelming practice.

The school implemented ReadTheory, a tool discovered at a conference, to provide short passage practice. Using ReadTheory’s Premium features to assign specific passages and track progress, students showed significant improvement, with some advancing two to three grade levels in a year. The platform increased student motivation through competitions and provided invaluable data for one-on-one instruction and parent meetings, leading to a high level of success and a planned renewal of the Premium subscription.
