Partnerships in Infrastructure for Increased Community Resilience

The City of Parramatta, one of Australia's most flash-flood prone cities, faced the challenge of protecting over 23,000 homes and businesses from deep, fast-flowing floodwaters that could arrive with less than six hours' warning. A significant portion of its population had no direct experience with major floods, making a rapid, informed emergency response critical. To address this, the city partnered with ReadiNow to develop the Parramatta River Flood Information System Hub (FISH).

ReadiNow's solution, FISH, integrated real-time sensor data with advanced rainfall forecasts to power a fast flood model, visualized through an online portal. This provided emergency planners with targeted flood forecasts for a faster, more informed response. The community-facing component, FloodSmart Parramatta, allowed residents to sign up for free warnings and access preparedness guides. The ReadiNow implementation fostered crucial partnerships with infrastructure and emergency service providers, ultimately creating a resilient system to keep the community safe despite the inevitable occurrence of floods.
