William Paterson University Expands Safety Net for Its Temporary Visitors

William Paterson University of New Jersey faced a gap in its emergency communications: continuing-education students, camp counselors, bookstore and dining service staff, conference attendees and other temporary visitors were not included in the university’s permanent alert database. To close that coverage gap the university turned to Rave Mobile Safety and its Rave Alert mass notification system, specifically the SMS Opt-In feature, which promised a way to reach transient campus populations without adding them to long-term records.

William Paterson implemented Rave Mobile Safety’s SMS Opt-In so temporary visitors can text to enroll for alerts that automatically expire; about 90% of summer camp counselors opted in and received two timely black-bear alerts last season. Bookstore and dining staff likewise received severe-weather and opening/closing notices, allowing them to adjust travel and operations. The Rave Alert deployment extended emergency reach to previously unreachable groups, improving situational awareness and response across campus.
