A Rapid7 Case Study
The University of Texas at Dallas needed to reduce vulnerabilities across a large, growing campus network and speed detection and investigation of security incidents affecting roughly 20,000 IP addresses and 5,000 faculty and staff. The security team also wanted to mature processes so new technology purchases required thorough security assessments and departments could participate in vulnerability management without creating chaos.
UT Dallas implemented Rapid7 Nexpose for delegated vulnerability scanning (about 100 users run scans monthly), Metasploit for quick proof-of-concept exploit demonstrations, and InsightUBA for user-to-event correlation and faster incident response. In six months Nexpose helped drive roughly a 32% drop in vulnerabilities; InsightUBA trimmed incident investigation time from 2–3 business days to about 60 seconds and produces 10–15 alerts per day (2–3 actionable), while detailed Nexpose reports improved prioritization and cross-department collaboration.
