Italian University Gains a "Panorama" View of Overall Risk with Rapid7 InsightIDR

Universita’ degli Studi di Palermo, a major Italian university with about 42,000 students and 3,600 staff, faced the challenge of securing hundreds of thousands of assets with a three-person IT/security team. They needed centralized, compliant log retention and a single “panorama” view of vulnerabilities and exposed services across diverse and transient devices (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android), plus faster, cross-service querying to reduce manual work.

The university deployed Rapid7 InsightIDR for cloud-based log management and detection and InsightVM (formerly Nexpose) for vulnerability management. Centralized logs, the LEQL search, and intuitive dashboards delivered faster investigations, uncovered malware and a SYN flooding incident, and maintained log availability during a local backup outage. The result is clearer visibility into overall risk, easier incident response, and a streamlined path to add threat intelligence and endpoint agents.
