InsightVM Provides Visibility and Control to Keep Staff and Students Safe at Manchester Metropolitan University

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is one of the UK’s largest higher-education institutions with 38,000 students, 3,000 staff, and a highly heterogeneous network of Windows, Linux, macOS, desktop and mobile devices across two sites. Facing frequent phishing, ransomware, DDoS and data-exfiltration threats — and working with a small security team of three — MMU needed a way to extend visibility and control across many subnets and asset types without adding overhead.

MMU deployed Rapid7 InsightVM (with evaluation of InsightIDR), which migrated smoothly and provided a central inventory, attacker-informed analytics, targeted scanning per subnet, and granular exploitability data. The team gained faster, clearer remediation guidance, customizable reporting for different departments, and time savings that reduced risk and increased confidence to expand use of Rapid7 features like Remediation Projects and a SIEM.
