A Rainforest QA Case Study
Birch Grove Software, maker of the user-behavior analytics app ActivTrak, faced limited QA resources and a mostly manual testing process that slowed releases and left regression coverage thin. Heath Hughes, Lead QA Engineer, was tasked with building a more reliable QA practice on a small team and needed a way to catch high-priority bugs faster without growing headcount.
He invested heavily up front—spending ~75% of his time for 2–3 months—to build a Rainforest test suite (now >180 tests), then maintained it 25–50% of his time using short, focused tests, exploratory testers, tabular variables and embedded steps. Rainforest now handles the bulk of regression testing, surfaces 1–2 bugs per run (over a third high priority), sped up feedback cycles, expanded coverage, freed Heath to work on higher-value tasks, and contributed to rising customer satisfaction.
