A Raima Case Study
Metso Automation USA was operating its IMAS Process Control Data Server (PCDS) to collect high-rate sensor and process data but ran into severe performance and growth issues after standardizing on a leading open-source SQL database. The relational model caused 2–3 minute (and occasionally up to 5 minute) delays that lost set points, slowed transactions due to complex inter-table relationships, and drove exponential storage growth. Metso turned back to Raima and its RDM Server (formerly Velocis) to address these problems.
Raima replaced the SQL backend with RDM Server 8.0 and the Raima Database Manager network data model, using the C navigational API for high-speed data collection and the SQL API for configuration. The switch eliminated the data delays, delivered at least 50% better performance by Metso’s measure, cut database size roughly in half, removed latency caused by relational joins/indices, and enabled modeling of more complex data structures — restoring reliable, high-performance operation for Metso Automation USA.
