Puget Sound Energy Nips Copper Thefts With A Video Verified Security System

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) was losing money and risking safety after 117 distribution substation break-ins in 2011—costing the utility close to $500,000 and causing serious injuries. To combat chronic copper theft, PSE deployed Radius Vision’s wireless, battery-powered motion-detection camera security system with video-verified confirmation.

Radius Vision’s systems were installed at 140 highly targeted distribution substations; when motion is detected a 10‑second clip is sent to a monitoring center and PSE security, and verified break‑ins trigger a police “Priority One” response. The Radius Vision deployment sharply deterred thieves and drove a significant drop in thefts, helping PSE protect people and assets, minimize power interruptions, and reduce late‑night technician callouts.
