Detection of a Crypto-Mining Malware Attack at a Water Utility

Water Utility Company, working with Radiflow, faced a crypto-mining malware attack on its SCADA servers. Because the network supported cloud-based OT analytics and remote maintenance, it had internet connectivity that exposed it to malicious traffic and created risk of degraded performance and operational disruption.

Radiflow used its iSID intrusion detection platform, fed by Smart Probes, to identify abnormal traffic, trace miner-related IPs and ports, and support cleanup and hardening efforts. The utility updated antivirus and firewall rules to prevent recurrence, and Radiflow’s monitoring also captured forensic evidence; the attack was shown to consume about 39% of traffic and increase overall bandwidth use by 60%.
