Case Study: Vancouver Airport Authority achieves highly available, scalable, and secure AWS migration of its self-service border control solution with Rackspace Technology (Onica by Rackspace Technology)

A Rackspace Technology Case Study

Preview of the Vancouver Airport Authority Case Study

Vancouver Airport Authority successfully migrated a self-service border control solution to AWS

Innovative Travel Solutions (ITS), an independent unit of Vancouver International Airport (YVR), provides self‑service border‑control kiosks used at major international airports. ITS needed to migrate its on‑premises US Customs and Border Control automation platform to the cloud while maintaining high availability, scalability, strict security, and a tested disaster‑recovery capability with low RPO/RTO.

Onica by Rackspace Technology recommended AWS and led a phased migration with a PoC and beta, implementing a VPC‑based architecture using EC2 Auto Scaling behind ELB across multiple Availability Zones, RDS Multi‑AZ, S3 backups, CloudWatch monitoring, and cross‑region disaster recovery via CloudFormation. The migration successfully moved all customer airports to AWS, enabled rapid capacity changes and ongoing growth, and shifted Onica to provide 24x7 support and continued design and consulting.
