A Rackspace Technology Case Study

Preview of the Samsung Case Study

Samsung scales up for the biggest live TV event in U.S. history

Samsung, a global leader in consumer electronics, needed to deliver a new Smart TV advertising experience during the Super Bowl halftime show. The challenge was enormous: create and maintain more than 4,000,000 concurrent connections and handle intense, short-lived bursts of data traffic to and from Samsung Smart TVs during the largest live TV event in U.S. history.

Rackspace partnered with Samsung and built a scalable, elastic solution on AWS using Amazon CloudFront, S3, Kinesis, Elastic Beanstalk, Redshift and a custom VPC, plus custom TV-side code. After extensive load testing (simulating up to 1,000,000 concurrent requests per second) and supporting 500,000 req/s in production, the system processed and analyzed live data from millions of Smart TVs, delivered personalized experiences with headroom to spare, became an AWS showcase, and enabled migration of roughly 40 applications to the cloud.
