A Rackspace Technology Case Study
Rip Curl, a 45‑year‑old leader in surf apparel, developed the SearchGPS watch to capture and store detailed surf-session data and share stats via a social network. The company faced the dual challenge of turning raw GPS and sensor data into meaningful session visualizations and building a backend that could manage and scale for a potentially massive influx of user data while maintaining speed and reliability.
Rackspace supported Rip Curl with Managed Cloud services on OpenStack Public Cloud to provide scalable backend data management and high availability. Early testing with 200 prototype users showed the SearchGPS was poised to disrupt surfing by increasing competition and motivation, and Rip Curl credited the Rackspace partnership for delivering the necessary reliability and performance.
