Coinstar, the operator of a global network of self-service kiosks that convert spare change into cash, gift cards or donations, needed to separate its IT from its former parent after an Outerwall split. Left with an eight-person IT team supporting aging colocation hardware and costly, outdated maintenance contracts — including manual on-site device replacements — the company faced an urgent need to modernize, scale and cut operating expenses.

Working with Rackspace, Coinstar migrated roughly 1,000 VMs to a Dedicated VMware vCenter private cloud, used Rackspace Professional Services for SRM training, and consolidated Hosted SAP support under Rackspace’s managed services. The five-month migration eliminated legacy colo dependencies, streamlined support into a single provider, and reduced IT spend by 40% while lowering application support burdens and ongoing maintenance costs.
