Case Study: Century Engineering achieves scalable, secure IoT stormwater management to protect waterways with Rackspace Technology

A Rackspace Technology Case Study

Preview of the Century Engineering Case Study

Century Engineering turns to the cloud to keep our waterways clean

Century Engineering, a multidisciplinary consulting firm founded in 1953, needed a scalable, secure way to meet EPA stormwater monitoring requirements and reduce pollution from runoff. Manual monitoring was impractical, so the company set out to develop SmartSWM™, an IoT-driven system that uses real-time local conditions and forecasted precipitation to autonomously control stormwater facility operations.

Partnering with Onica (a Rackspace Technology company) and using AWS IoT and cloud services, Century refined hardware and backend architecture—resolving analog sensor and signal issues, adding tamper detection and cellular connectivity, and building a cloud decision engine that sends optimized valve commands to site controllers. The result is a reliable, secure, production-ready SmartSWM™ system that improves pollutant removal, reduces flooding and erosion, enables smaller facility footprints for more efficient land use, and lays the groundwork for future machine-learning enhancements.
