Aeroméxico soars from digital latecomer to omnichannel leader

Aeroméxico, Mexico’s 80‑year‑old flagship airline, faced mounting pressure from low‑cost competitors and underperforming digital channels: few customers checked in online, payment acceptance was low, and online sales lagged. The airline chose a full IT transformation to overhaul reservations, backend systems and customer touchpoints while maintaining security, availability and scalability.

Partnering with Rackspace, Aeroméxico rebuilt its infrastructure and apps—deploying OpenStack and VMware private clouds, managed security and disaster recovery—and launched an API‑driven omnichannel ecosystem (website, mobile app, kiosks and chatbots). The result: online sales tripled, mobile penetration rose ~40% with a 4× mobile conversion rate, UI performance improved ~50%, credit‑card acceptance climbed to about 90%, and the majority of passengers now check in digitally.
