Spunta, the Italian banking consortium behind the country’s interbank reconciliation process, needed to replace a legacy “spunta” workflow that was slow, fragmented, and difficult to reconcile across multiple banks. Working with R3 and its Corda Enterprise platform, the industry sought a more transparent, standardized, and efficient way to manage interbank transaction matching and exception handling.

R3 implemented a permissioned DLT solution on Corda Enterprise that enabled secure data sharing, automated matching, standardized communication, and real-time reconciliation across 100 Italian banks. The results were strong: within the first six months, Spunta Banca DLT processed 204 million transactions with a 97.6% automatic match rate, and the network later expanded to cover 91% of Italian banks, replacing the legacy process entirely.
