Saint Luke’s Health System, a faith-based, not-for-profit health system with 16 hospitals in the Kansas City region and $1.6B in net patient revenue, faced capacity imbalances between high-demand hospitals and lower-census facilities. Their goals were to achieve “systemness,” optimize flow across facilities, predict bottlenecks in advance, reduce queuing and backlogs, accelerate discharges, shorten length of stay, and automate manual discharge processes. To address this, Saint Luke’s expanded its partnership with Qventus, deploying the Qventus Inpatient, Command Center, and Covid-19 solutions.

Qventus integrated its AI/ML-enabled platform with Saint Luke’s EHR to predict barriers to discharge days in advance, prioritize tasks for ancillaries, hardwire workflows, and balance patient loads systemwide. The implementation reduced process variability, decreased length of stay, lowered message noise and cognitive load on teams, and improved throughput and patient experience; it also enabled Saint Luke’s to maintain elective surgeries during Covid surges and is projected to deliver a financial return in the range of tens of millions of dollars per year. Qventus’s tools gave real-time and predictive visibility that helped the system handle peak demand while keeping operations running.
