Sydney Living Museums unveils immersive, technology-based visiting experience

Sydney Living Museums, the State cultural institution behind the Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney, wanted to reinvent the museum experience for visitors. For the Hyde Park Barracks renewal project, they needed a way to combine history with interactive technology so guests could explore the site independently while still receiving relevant content at the right moment. They chose Quuppa’s real-time location system as the core technology for this immersive, self-guided experience.

Quuppa, implemented with deployment support from Gradient Advanced Technologies, installed Locators in the museum ceiling to track visitor devices and trigger audio and video content as people approached exhibits. The result was a highly successful, immersive museum journey that visitors praised for making them feel like they were stepping back in time, with stories playing automatically through headphones at specific displays. Sydney Living Museums said Quuppa technology performed very well, and they now plan to expand its use to help optimize visitor flows and manage visitor volumes across other sites.
