A Quobyte Case Study
HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, a nonprofit genomics research organization in Huntsville, Alabama, needed a storage platform that could keep up with rapidly growing data volumes while balancing performance, capacity, and cost. After evaluating several vendors, HudsonAlpha found that flash-based, appliance-style systems were too expensive at petabyte scale, too dependent on NFS, and too restrictive for scaling and management, so it turned to Quobyte for a more flexible solution.
Quobyte implemented a hardware-agnostic, software-defined storage platform for HudsonAlpha’s production and “hot” workloads, giving the team fast petabyte-scale expansion, web-based monitoring, and API-driven reporting. With Quobyte, HudsonAlpha can add capacity quickly by bringing new servers online in minutes, manage storage by project and user in real time, and support chargeback/showback reporting more effectively, helping ensure storage no longer becomes a bottleneck for research.
