A Qumulo Case Study
Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (FBRI) at Virginia Tech Carilion needed to replace a limited legacy storage environment that couldn’t keep up with rapid data growth, multiple platforms, and the demands of biomedical research. Its existing system created data silos, made sharing difficult across Windows, Linux, and Mac users, and raised ongoing concerns about protection and business continuity. Qumulo’s file data platform was chosen to centralize storage and better support the institute’s expanding research operations.
Qumulo helped FBRI consolidate project, archival, lab, administrative, and VM data into a single platform with snapshots, remote replication, and multi-protocol support. The result was simplified data management, stronger protection for irreplaceable research data, and improved performance, including 40Gb connectivity and plans for 100Gb in the new facility. Qumulo also enabled real-time replication of 100% of data between sites and supported FBRI’s growth to a 1.9PB cluster and new all-NVMe storage for future expansion.
